Death of music legend Gordon Lorenz
THE producer responsible for one of the more unlikely songs to top the charts has died suddenly in his Welsh home after a short illness.
Gordon Lorenz, from Llandudno, penned sentimental classic There’s No-one Quite Like Grandma, which in 1980 became a massive hit for the St Winifred’s School Choir of Stockport, to mark the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday.
The novelty song spent two weeks in the top spot – before becoming the highest-selling single of that year, landing Mr Lorenz an Ivor Novello award.
He had been working with the Llandudno Town Band at London’s famous Abbey Road studios until falling ill on Friday and was found dead at his Llandudno home on Sunday.
