Spirit of ‘77: Looking back at the last Duquesne team to make the NCAA tournament 47 years ago
The U.S. was in the middle of an energy crisis so bad that Pennsylvania joined a number of other states in closing all private and public schools for a week in late January to conserve energy.
About a month later, the Duquesne University basketball team got energized after an up-and-down, subpar regular season.
Led by superstar guard Norm Nixon from Macon, Ga., who would go on to win NBA championships, and helped by a host of players from Western Pennsylvania, the Dukes stepped on the gas and had a magical run over four days in Philadelphia that resulted in a postseason conference tournament championship, a berth in the NCAA tournament and memories to last a lifetime.
That was 1977, the last time Duquesne put up their Dukes in March Madness — until this year.
